Grigri Pixel is a programme that aims to explore practices of cultural cooperation and citizenship between Africa and Europe, through the development of a series of workshops for the fabrication of “grigris” or magical objects to intervene in urban spaces applying art strategies and using digital manufacturing tools, creating a network of collaborative and experimental practices from both continents.
The third edition of Grigri Pixel, scheduled from 15 to 28 October in Medialab Prado, will focus on the Right to the City, designing, constructing and activating objects that will be part of a festive intervention in the form of a pilgrimage at Paseo del Prado in Madrid city center. An action to conjure up and re-enchant this area, a proposal to experience the city as a place for meeting and for collective creativity, and to appeal, from this experience, other memories and imaginary of a multicultural and diverse citizenship.
Within the framework of the workshop, the round table “Right to the city – Right to other urban imaginaries” will be held on Saturday 20 October to share experiences, imaginaries and reflections capable of generating inclusive, creative and diverse cities between the two continents.
On 3 September, the call for collaborators to participate in this workshop will be opened. The workshop will be attended by the sound artist Abdellah M. Hassak from the Musée Collectif, Casablanca; Faty Kane from the Sahel Fablab in Nouakchott; Mama Kone from the Festival Art Femme, Bamako, Mmakhotso Lamola from Limbic Resonance in Cape Town, Lalya Gaye from Newcastle and Neo Maditla from Design Indab in South Africa, the latter invited thanks to the support of the PICE programme.
This activity is curated by Susana Moliner together with Enorme Studio, design and production office for experimental urban interventions, Blanca Callén, researcher and lecturer at BAU, Centro Universitario de Diseño de Barcelona and Yago Torroja, electronic engineer and lecturer at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
Since its first edition, Grigri Pixel has had the support of ACERCA, AECID’s training program for development in the cultural sector.
Abdellah Hassak, sound artist participating in the Musée Collectif. This project is the result of research, compilation, reflection and creation by groups of artists, activists, students, children and residents who work in their neighborhoods to recover unknown stories.
This initiative is implemented through a series of workshops, meetings and temporary exhibitions in various neighbourhoods (Ain Chock, Old Medina, Ben Msick, Bernoussi, Sidi Moumen, Oulfa, Hay Mohammedi, etc.) before its installation in the public space in the centre of Casablanca planned for 2019.
A participatory process for writing the history of the city for its citizens, the Collective Museum houses objects, documents, archives and testimonies of the inhabitants about the memory of their neighborhoods through micro-stories, the intimate, the forgotten and the margins of cities.
The Sahel Fablab, part of the global FabLab network (Manufacturing Laboratory), is a coworking space that promotes creativity, inventiveness and the exchange of skills, where Faty Kane actively participates.
This space, located in a suburb of Nouakchott, is open to students, entrepreneurs, DIY enthusiasts and anyone who wants to discover, learn and share their experiences.
Faty is also an active member of the Femmes & TIC association, which aims to provide women of all ages with the necessary knowledge to take ownership of digital tools and thus facilitate their empowerment and professional integration.

The “Côté-Court” Cultural Association is based in Bamako and was created in 2011. It is committed to art, and in particular to theatre in public spaces, as a tool for education and citizen empowerment in its country.
With the help of its partners, Côté-Court works to raise the awareness of the people of Mali and Africa, especially young people, by developing workshops and theatre performances as a means of democratising public space.
One of the main actions of the Côte-Court has been to create a festival where women play a central role, carrying out training in the different branches of the performing arts with a gender focus. Since 2016 they have organized the ARTS-FEMMES festival, whose main objective is to recognize the place and role of women in artistic creation. It is a biennial event and its last edition took place from 29 March to 1 April 2018 in Bamako.

“Limbic Resonance” is a research project by Mmakhotso Lamola that seeks to unearth narratives and experiences of other people[queer, colored people, women] living in Cape Town and materialize them through a series of interactive installations and web content.
Limbic Resonance describes how the chemistry and nervous system of our brain are influenced by those around us and are closer to us through resonant energies and emotions (auras). This ability to share deep emotional states arises from the limbic system of the brain. These states include the resonance of feelings of empathic harmony or emotional states of fear, anxiety and anger.
The project focuses on the limbic resonance of empathy, which is a non-verbal connection existing in all animals. It is the source of our social connections as well as various modes of therapy and healing. It is sometimes called the common language of love.

Born in 1978 in Geneva, Switzerland, Lalya Gaye is a Swedish and Senegalese-Malian digital media artist and interaction design researcher based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. At the convergence of art, technology, and design, her work explores the poetic integration of digital technology into everyday environments, behaviours, urban space and everyday artefacts, in order to grasp and revisit our physical and emotional relations to the everyday, to space and to distance.
She builds public art installations with various media such as steel, light and sound, takes part in site-specific audio experiments, teaches digital media and interaction design at graduate level, delivers creative electronics workshops, and regularly organizes cross-disciplinary research workshops and small music and sound-art festivals.
